Traditional gold and silver jewellery was embellished with pearls, ivory, tortoise-shell and gemstones to a lesser extent. Today precious and semi- precious stones mined locally in provinces such as Nghe An provide new materials for the contemporary jeweller.

Phuc Tin has created a whole range of interesting settings for these local gemstones. The butterfly and flower motifs worked into the silver mounting for the cabochon-cut black onyx is one such example. As in the case with many of the covered boxes the unseen reverse side of this mounting has also been worked.

Innovative new designs have also been introduced. The traditional hollow tubular torque now features flat planes, oblique angles and applied motifs and is particularly appealing to young sophisticated urban women. The traditional earings with large fixed shank that passed easefully through the distended ear-lobe opening of the traditionally pierced ear has been discreetly modified to a screw-on shank.

This simple change accommodates the small lobe opening of today’s generation without altering the visual appearance of the earings.

These renovations address in a very practical way dramatic changes that have taken place in all aspects of lifestyle
